Talofa lava!
Last week was Samoan language week, and in class, we learnt things about Samoa. Here’s what I learnt:
Colours
I learnt colours in Samoan, then wrote a song about it to the Cup Song with Jiya. Here are the colours I learnt:
Red – Mumu
Orange – Lanu moli
Yellow – Samasama
Green – Lanu meamata
Blue – Lanu moana
Purple – Pa’auli, or viole
Pink – Piniki
White – Pa’epa’e
Black – Uliuli
Silver – Lanu siliva
Grey – Lanu ‘efu ‘efu
Gold – Lanu auro
Savalivali
We learnt the first bit to Savalivali in class. Here’s the song (this obviously isn’t us :P)
Samoan alphabet
Izzy and Sophie A made a slideshow about the Samoan alphabet. Here’s the Samoan alphabet:
A, e, i, o, u, f, g, l, m, n, p, s, t, v, h, k, r
Lavalava
Annabelle and Emily demonstrated how to put on a lavalava, a type of clothing worn in Samoa, by both men and women. Here is what a lavalava looks like (image from here):
Samoan numbers
Emily, Jiya, and I made up a game called Numera (that means ‘number’ in Samoan) (and according to Google Translate, ‘numera’ also means ‘nowadays’ in Swedish), so we could learn the numbers in Samoan. Here they are:
1 – Tasi
2 – Lua
3 – Tolu
4 – Fa
5 – Lima
6 – Ono
7 – Fitu
8 – Valu
9 – Iva
10 – Sefulu
Coconut buns
The final thing that I learnt – coconut buns are really nice!
Why it’s important to learn about other cultures
I think it’s important because it’s interesting to learn about what other people do and how it differs from what you do, what languages they speak, what it’s like where they live, what they eat, and more. Also, it’s good to learn more things!
Thanks for reading. Tofa soifua!
